Greene’s Three Plans

• Plan A: Asserting Adult Will

This is when the parent says, “No, you can’t” or “It’s my way or the highway.” Dr. Greene states that adults imposing their will upon children will only increase the risk of a tantrum, and it also does not teach skills. However, Greene does say that Plan A has its purpose in emergency or safety situations. This method is typically a reactive approach, since the child has already used undesirable behaviors before the parent has had a chance to proactively intervene. If a parent has the opportunity to be proactive and is able to step in prior to this occurring, Greene says to use Plan B instead.

• Plan B: Collaborative Problem-Solving (CPS)

o Step 1 Empathy: Using empathy is really important for anxious children. It can help the adult gain an understanding of the trigger or the antecedent of the child’s behavior. To begin gathering information in a non-accusatory manner, you can use an I-notice… statement, just as in the How to Talk so Kids can Learn example.
